Charlotte Pass is roughly a 6hr drive from Sydney however it is recommended to leave plenty of time for Ski Tube, Parking etc.

Parking & Transport

Park at the Ski Tube (parking is free) and catch the Ski Tube to Perisher Valley Terminal. From there oversnow can be arranged at the Charlotte Pass Ticket window if you haven't booked it with your accommodation.

A little bit of history

Charlotte Pass is Australia’s highest resort at 1760m above sea level. Charlotte Pass is nine kms beyond Perisher at the end of Summit Road in Kosciuszko National Park. It is completely snowbound in the winter and access to the resort is by over-snow transport only. It is also known as Australia’s oldest and coldest resort, mercury dipped to minus 23 degrees on June 29, 1994, the lowest-ever recorded temperature in mainland Australia.

In February 1881, a 21yr old Tasmanian woman, Charlotte Adams accompanied her father on a surveying trip and became the first European woman to climb to the peak of Kosciuszko. The village of Charlotte Pass, is named after her.

The historic Kosciuszko Chalet was the first building to be built in the village, and was opened On May 10, 1930. The Chalet was one of several alpine accommodation facilities built by government in Australia, and offered an opulent life style at the time

The Chalet burnt down in August 1938, and a new Chalet was built in its place the following summer. It was the NSW Railways that rebuilt the chalet and it was railway engineers who erected a nearby J-bar in 1938 that was the first mechanical ski lift to operate successfully in Australia.

The Chalet is still the largest and most significant building in the village, and remains the heart of the village in winter.
