Driving to Mt Buller

Driving in your own car or a hire car is only a short 3-hour drive from Melbourne via the Hume Highway or Maroondah Highway. Mansfield is the closest major town and what ever route you take to Mt Buller you will pass through Mansfield following the signs to Mt Buller.

Once you reach the base of Mt Buller (Mirimbah) you will be required to stop at the gate entry point and pay a fee to enter the Resort. Once through the gate entry point, continue up the road to Mt Buller.

The Mt Buller Village is located above the snow line, only a limited amount and type of cars are permitted to actually drive into the Village (access is normally restricted to residents, property owners and mountain staff). Most cars are required to stop at a car park about 1.5km below the Village. At this point, you will be met by an attendant who will guide you to a parking spot.

From here, you can either jump on a free shuttle bus (for day visitors) that will take you up into the Village centre or get in a 4WD taxi (for people staying overnight) which will take you right to your accommodation.

If you'd like to drive to Mansfield but would prefer to sit back and relax for the trip up into the Mt Buller Village, you can always jump on bus for the last leg of the trip. Mansfield-Mt Buller Bus Lines provides regular services from Mansfield, Merrijig and Mirimbah, which means no chain hire or mountain driving.

Fly to Mt Buller

The quickest way to get to Mt Buller is via Helicopter. Imagine skiing within an hour of leaving Melbourne. This is a great option for those who are doing a day trip and don't want to waste any time travelling. SNOW CHAINS

In Victorian resorts chains must be carried in all cars (including 4WD and AWD) within the Alpine Resorts. Snow chains can be hired from most service stations or ski hire outlets. It is recommended that chains be carried in 2wd vehicles even where it is not mandatory as conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Snow chain requirements may vary from 2 wheel drive (2WD), four wheel drive (4WD) and all wheel drive (AWD).
Daily chain requirements are communicated via large flashing billboards as you enter and leave Mansfield and on the daily snow report.

PARKING AND OVERSNOW TRANSPORT

The resort of Mt Buller allows only authorised vehicles within the resort. All visitors’ cars will be required to stop at a car park approximately 1.5 kilometres below the village. At this point you will be met by an attendant who will guide you to a parking spot.

From here you will take a 4WD taxi which will take you to your accommodation. Oversnow taxis start from $20 per adult one way and $13 per child one way from the car park to your accommodation.

FOR DAY VISITORS - There is a free bus shuttle from the Horse Hill car parks to the Village (no luggage allowed).
